If you already have some goldfish, you might be wondering if you can give your glofish some goldfish food. This article will answer that question, and also give some glofish feeding tips.
Can glofish eat goldfish food?
Yes, glofish can eat goldfish food as long as the pellets are not bigger than their mouth. However, goldfish pellets aren’t natural to a glofish diet.
While it probably won’t cause any harm for your glofish to eat goldfish food, it shouldn’t be the staple of their diet.
Let me explain.
Goldfish pellets for glofish
Goldfish pellets can range in size. This is no surprise, as goldfish can reach sizes way over a foot long. Since glofish are much smaller, it is important that you never feed your glofish pellets that are bigger than their mouth.
If your glofish tries to consume a large pellet, it can get impacted in their digestive system and cause a lot of problems. Therefore, make sure the pellets are smaller than your glofish’s mouth.
Glofish can eat smaller goldfish pellets, but there is a chance they won’t like the taste.
Taste
I have found that my glofish don’t like the taste of goldfish food. I have tried both floating and sinking goldfish pellets, and my glofish will take a bite and then spit it out.
Sometimes, if they haven’t eaten in a while, they will eat the pellets, but this is only because they are hungry. I have had success with feeding my goldfish glofish pellets. You can learn more in my article on can glofish live with goldfish?
I would stay away from pellets that are vegetable flavored, because the taste is not attractive to glofish. Also, don’t try to force your glofish to like goldfish food. If you force them to eat something they don’t like, overtime they might stop eating. In extreme cases, a glofish refusing to eat might be a sign that it is dying.
As a reminder, you should not feed glofish or goldfish any type of cheese.
What happens if you feed your glofish goldfish food?
Based on my experience, glofish usually won’t eat the goldfish food that you give them. However, if they do consume it, there shouldn’t be a problem.
That being said, you should keep a close eye on your glofish for a couple days when you start feeding them goldfish food. You should switch their diet immediately if you notice a change in behavior or swimming patters, such as swimming sideways.
Feeding a glofish their natural diet can help maintain their health better. It will also help keep their bright, vibrant colors, especially if you have a glofish led light.
For this reason, I suggest feeding your glofish something that is more natural to their diet.
What do glofish like to eat?
In general, glofish prefer to eat flake food. These are much easier to consume compared to pellets. Glofish should be fed flakes that have a lot of carotenoids and carotene. Both of these nutrients help keep your glofish’s color bright.
I have found that my glofish like this flake blend the best. It is designed specifically for glofish.
It’s high in protein and other nutrients that are important for a glofish diet. It also contains amino acids which will help your glofish maintain their bright aesthetic. My glofish flock to the food the second I put it inside their tank. It is also pretty cheap, and you can buy it on amazon or in your local Petco.
If you can’t find the glofish flakes listed above, it’s totally fine to feed your glofish generic fish food flakes.
You can also feed your glofish brine shrimp. They are great for young glofish that are still in need of a lot of protein to grow. You can also feed your glofish freeze-dried food, but you should make sure it is small enough for them to consume.
If you want to feed your glofish pellets, I suggest you use pellets that are designed specifically for glofish. A great option are these mini pellets. They are much smaller than goldfish pellets and contain nutrients that are vital for a glofish’s diet.

How often should glofish eat?
While it depends on the type and size of food that you give them, you should usually feed your glofish one to two times per day.
I try to give them enough food that they can consume in two minutes. If there is still food left over after two minutes, that means you are giving them too much. Not only can this cause your glofish to overeat, but it can also cause your tank to get dirtier because the food will decompose.
