Can I use GE Silicone 1 for my Aquarium?

Can I use GE Silicone 1 for my Aquarium?

There are many reasons why you might need to use a sealer in your fish tank. One of them most common reasons people use caulk in their fish tank is to put a sump in place, or to seal down any other fish tank equipment. Sealer can also be used to pin down certain ornaments that are not able to stand still. When it comes to choosing a sealant, you want to make sure you choose something that is safe for your fish and/or plants. Its is important to understand that just because something is waterproof does not mean it is safe for your aquarium. A caulk can be waterproof but still release toxic chemicals when kept underwater. Therefore, it is imperative that you ensure something is waterproof safe before putting it into your aquarium. In today’s article, we are going to discuss whether ge silicone 1 is safe for your fish tank.

Can I use GE Silicone 1 for my Aquarium?

Yes, you can use GE silicone 1 for your aquarium. Silicone caulk is compatible to work on a wide range of materials such as class, metal, and ceramic. This is because it is very malleable and able to stick to nonporous materials. While GE silicone 1 is usually used for bathrooms and other wet areas, it is 100% waterproof and safe to put in your aquarium. There are some bottles that say not to put ge silicone 1 in your fish tank, but that is solely for legal purposes. If applied correctly, ge silicone 1 is safe for your aquarium and last for a long time. On the other hand, you should never put Acrylic latex caulk in your fish tank because it is not water resistant.

How to apply GE Silicone 1 in fish tank

No matter what surface you are putting it on, it is very important that you seal the caulk so that there are no air pockets or bubbles. We recommend wiping the caulk afterwards to ensure that it is sealed against the surface. Even just a couple air pockets can cause the caulk to come apart once underwater.

Another important aspect is ensuring that the caulk will last is to wait for the caulk to be cured before filling  up the aquarium with water. GE Silicone 1 has a dry time of around 30 minutes, but this is not the same as being cured. If you plan on putting this caulk in an underwater aquarium, you should wait at least 2-3 days for the caulk to be cured before filling up the aquarium with water. Putting water in too early can cause the silicone to quickly deteriorate.

Other options for aquarium sealants?

Of course, there are many other options for aquarium sealants beside GE Silicone 1. There are a lot of cheap options on Amazon, and you can also use other types of caulk such as the RTV 100 series.
