Do Glofish Die Easily?

do glofish die easily

Glofish are slowly becoming the most popular fish of choice. It is no surprise given their illuminate aesthetic. However, if you are interested in these one of a kind fish, you probably want to know if glofish die easily.

Do glofish die easily?

Yes, in my experience, I’ve noticed glofish can die easily. I attribute it to their sensitivity to changes in environment, strict water parameters, and proneness to stress.

However, Glofish are not hard to keep alive if you provide them with an adequate introduction and environment. Below I will walk you by some of the reasons why I think glofish can die easily.

Sensitive to changes in environment

Glofish can be very sensitive to changes in the environment. Of course, their day of introduction should be the biggest change of environment in their life.

For this reason, it is important that you take the proper steps for this procedure. Try not to drive more than 30 minutes with glofish. Also, try your best to keep the temperature as constant as possible. Sudden changes can be deadly.

Also, make sure to leave your glofish in the bag for at least ten minutes so there is enough time for them to acclimate to the temperature.

Strict water parameters

Glofish require pretty strict water parameters. It can be very difficult for them to adjust to poor water conditions. For this reason, make sure you know the desired temperature for your glofish species.

Secondly, it is important that you have a clean tank without toxic compounds such as ammonia and nitrite. The best way to maintain a clean tank is to have a powerful filter. Also, make sure to know the proper pH level for your glofish.

It is also important to perform regular water changes. Not only does this help keep the water clean, but it can help add more oxygen into the water.

Prone to stress

I have also noticed that glofish can die easily due to their proneness to stress. It is important to recognize that glofish are school fish which means they should be kept in groups. Keeping them in small numbers is unnatural to them and can cause health issues.

You should also make sure to have some glofish tank decorations. They will give them place to hide when they want to rest. They also add a great aesthetic to your glofish.

Lastly, it is important that your glofish have enough space. An easy way to stress out a glofish is to not give it enough room.

Recognize the signs

It is important to keep a close eye on your glofish, especially when they are new to your tank. Look out for signs of stress or illness, such as swimming sideways, not eating, and little to no movement.

Should I get a glofish?

Yes, you should absolutely get a glofish if you want to. I didn’t mean for this to deter you from getting one. I just want to make it clear that it is important to provide them with the proper conditions.

I have had glofish for a long time, and after I got the hang of it, they almost always live a happy and long life.
